Three Spouted Jugs for Holy Oils
Description
The bishop of Basel consecrated the holy oils for use throughout the diocese every year on the Thursday before Easter. These jugs were used for pouring the oils into smaller flasks.
The inscriptions on the lid specify the contents of each jug:
S(ANCTUM) O(LEUM) PUERORUM = oil for catechumens (those preparing to receive the sacrament of baptism)
S(ANCTUM) OLEVM INFIRMOR[UM] = oil for anointing the sick and infirm
S(ANCTUM) CRISMA = chrism, a mixture of oil and balsam for administering the Seven Sacraments
