The Exhibition
Description
The exhibition offers an insight into György Ligeti's artistic character, ideas and music in nine thematic chapters.
Each chapter is like a telescope through which aspects of a kaleidoscopically colourful and universally moving creative spirit are revealed from different angles. Or if you prefer: nine entrances to the Ligeti labyrinth, which puts visitors to the test and offers them unexpected junctions, passages, dead ends, curved mirrors and traps. Ligeti once described his creative quest thus: "I grope my way forward from work to work, in different directions, like a blind man in a labyrinth".
Most of the documents on display come from the archives of the Paul Sacher Foundation, namely from the György Ligeti Collection. Since 2000, the Foundation has preserved the composer's entire documentary estate at the Münsterplatz in Basel: music and text manuscripts, correspondence, sound recordings, photographs and parts of his personal library.
