The Barfüsserplatz

Description

The name of this square derives from the Order of St. Francis, also known at the time as ‘the bare-footed ones,’ which had been located here since the 13th century. Early on, the square was used as a place for markets and fairs. This depiction shows the situation before 1878, the Birsig stream behind the wall, in the centre of the image, still flowing openly in what is today’s Falknerstrasse. To the right of the picture one can see the Münster towers.
