Objekt 2123
Tariffs and admission fees
Description
Up to the late 19th century Basel was surrounded by walls which formed
the boundary between the town and the surrounding countryside. At the
town gates, people and goods were controlled and customs duties collected.
The gates were closed at nightfall and whoever requested admittance after
that had to pay. Subject to a fine were also those not back in time for the
evening sermon on Sundays and public holidays. The money was collected
in the gate fee tin. These strict rules were only loosened in the 19th century,
and in 1861 closure of the gates was abolished.
