Carriage clocks

A carriage clock, also known as a coach clock, is a travel clock that looks similar to a large neck watch or later a large pocket watch. In order to be able to take it along on journeys, it usually has a protective over-case. On the road, timepieces that were as reliable as possible were significant. In addition, carriage clocks were supposed to express the social status of the owner, which is why they are often made precious. Whether the clocks were actually hung on a hook during the bumpy ride in a carriage must be rather doubted. Perhaps they were also hung above the bed at the destination. Push buttons on the earlier models and chime repetition on the later ones suggest that the clocks were also used at night. The artistically sophisticated design and technical perfection make the carriage clocks examples of the entire art of clockmaking from the 16th to the 18th century.
