Proportion compass
Description
Proportion compasses have an external resemblance to a compass because of the two legs. However, there is no connection with regard to their function. The proportional compass is an analog calculating device, which saved the user laborious and time-consuming arithmetic operations by simple reading. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became a universal instrument used in surveying, military, architecture and arts and crafts. This one comes from the property of the Basel bell founder J. J. Schnegg (1826-1852).
