Portraits of the married couple Christoph and Margaretha Merian
Description
The portraits show the 59-year-old Christoph Merian (1800-1858) and his 55-year-old wife Margaretha Burckhardt-Merian (1806-1886) seated on the chairs on display. They donated the new Elisabethenkirche building in 1856 and bequeathed their large fortune to the city of Basel, from which the Christoph Merian Foundation emerged.
