Portrait of the Thurneysen-Frey family
Description
The interior provides an insight into the upper-class milieu of the Thurneysen-Frey family of merchants and ribbon manufacturers, who are dressed in the most modern taste of Empire fashion. They present themselves in the cabinet of their house at St. Alban-Vorstadt 5, facing the Rhine.
The sitters:
On the right, Dorothea Thurneysen-Frey (1755-1827), aged around 50, with her son Balthasar Thurneysen-Burckhardt (1780-1845), a ribbon manufacturer, and his wife Elisabeth (1787-1859).
On the left, her daughter Anna Margaretha Burckhardt-Thurneysen and her husband Karl Christian (1768-1846), a successful merchant and politician.
In the center are their children (from left to right):
Karl Burckhardt-Paravicini (1795-1850), later a doctor of law, president of the civil court and mayor, Margaretha and Wilhelm Burckhardt-Forcart (1797-1880), later a merchant and bank president.
