Portrait of Marie-Thérese-Charlotte de France (1778-1851)
Description
Marie-Thérese-Charlotte de France (1778-1851) was the eldest child of French King Louis XVI (r. 1774-1792) and was the only member of the royal family to survive the French Revolution. After her father's deposition and execution, she was initially held prisoner. On December 18, 1795, her imprisonment was finally lifted. On December 26, she was released on an estate near Basel in exchange for French prisoners of war. According to the caption, this occasion was also the reason for the creation of this portrait: "Publié à l'occasion du passage de cette Princesse à Basle le 26. Décembre 1795, par Chr. de Mechel Graveur".
