Portrait of Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826)

Description

Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826) was a German writer, Lutheran clergyman and teacher. Because of his volume of poems "Allemannische Gedichte" he is generally considered a pioneer of Alemannic dialect literature. Hebel spent part of his childhood in his native city of Basel, where he was orphaned at the age of 13. In Basel, his poem "Remembrance of Basel" ("Z Basel am mym Rhy") is best known. Since 1899, a monument commemorating the poet has stood on Peterskirchplatz in Basel.
