Portrait of Felix Sarasin the Younger with his son Felix Wilhelm
Description
Several portraits in the museum's collection document the work of the Italian painter Giovanni Moriggia from Caravaggio for the distinguished Basel families Bernoulli, Merian and Sarasin in the years 1836-1840.
As an important public figure - he was elected mayor of Basel in 1847 - Felix Sarasin the Younger (1797-1862) looks out of the picture. He has lovingly placed his arm around the hips of his son Felix Wilhelm (1829-1866), the third of five children. Felix and his sister Maria Caroline (1835-1923) were the only surviving children from his first marriage.
