Octagonal horizontal sundial
Description
In addition to the equatorial sundials of the "Augsburg type," horizontal sundials were in common use, also known as the "Butterfield type" after Michael Butterfield (1635-1724). An octagonal base plate with a recessed compass carries the foldable and height-adjustable pole triangle. This adjustable pole triangle allows adjustment to the latitude of a location. The retractable tripod represents a bird whose beak is used to adjust the degree of altitude. The time is read on the corresponding lines of the dial. The scales are arranged around the edge of the base plate for different pole heights. On the bottom of the base plate, there is usually an indication of the polar altitudes of various locations. Butterfield sundials were sold in a matching case.
