Objekt 2134
New bridges over the Rhine
Description
The city grew rapidly throughout the 19th century. For 650 years only one
bridge had led across the Rhine, yet now three more were built within ten
years. The Wettstein Bridge was constructed between 1877 and 1879. At the
World Fair in Paris in 1878, the project was awarded the Golden Diploma.
The constant increase in traffic meant that the bridge had to be widened
in the 1930s and provided with pavements. In 1995, the present Wettstein
Bridge was constructed following a referendum.
