Neck clock in the shape of a cross
Description
The case of this clock in the shape of a crucifix is made of rock crystal and has a gilt bronze setting. The Sermands came to Geneva in the 16th century as religious refugees. Jacques Sermand the Elder (1595-1651), born in Geneva, and his nephew of the same name, Jacques Sermand the Younger (1636-1667), emerged as clockmakers. The latter was baptized in the church of Saint-Gervais in Geneva and died on a business trip to Constantinople. Clocks of the Sermands have been preserved in various museums, such as the British Museum and the Louvre.
