Monkey from fountain on Andreasplatz, originally corner Elisabethenstrasse / Aeschenvorstadt

Description

At Aeschenvorstadt, at the corner of Elisabethenstrasse, stood a monkey fountain since the 17th century - it is first mentioned in 1657. However, it supplied too little and, moreover, not enough clean water. The fountain was removed in 1838 and the fountain trough together with the figure was moved to Petersgasse. When this fountain was rebuilt, the monkey figure found a new location on the fountain at Andreasplatz in 1867. When the figure later suffered damage, a copy was made and the original entered the museum's collection.
