Monastery Administration in Basel
Description
This very sculptural tablet was built into the façade of the Bläsihof on Untere Rebgasse, which was torn down in 1909. In medieval times, the Bläsihof was the seat of the Basel steward of the monastery of St. Blaise in the Black Forest. As it was Caspar I. Müller (1504–1571), Abbot of St. Blaise, who had the Bläsihof built, the tablet is blazoned with his personal coat of arms below the crozier and mitre. On the left is the coat of arms of the monastery itself and on the right that of the Bishopric of Constance. Caspar has gone down in history as an enterprising abbot and had new administrative buildings erected, or existing ones enlarged, in several places.
