Large picture slide: Transparent pictures

Description

Between around 1770 and 1840, it was fashionable to paint so-called "transparent pictures", which could create romantic moods with backlighting. They were displayed in specially designed cabinets, the "diapanoramas". The illustration shows the backlit original exhibited here with the view of the city of Basel. It is exceptionally large and painted on extremely thin canvas with an oiled back.
