Large astronomical monstrance clock

Description

The large astronomical table clock was made in Dresden in 1558 for the Elector August I of Saxony. August was scientifically educated and was particularly interested in astronomy, cartography, mathematics and metrology, and also collected astrological prophecies. With the Kunstkammer, founded in 1560, he laid the foundation for the art and natural science collections of the Dresden court.
