Insanely Normal – The History of Psychiatry in Basel

Description

What do we consider "normal", "abnormal" or "crazy"? Where is the line between mental health and mental illness? And how has this changed over time?
The exhibition tells the story of psychiatry over the last 150 years. Many approaches were tried in the search for healing methods. The question of the origin of mental illness was answered differently time and again. Accordingly, the test methods, diagnoses and therapies changed over time. In the exhibition, historical objects and case studies from the Basel clinic show this shift.
Given the complexity of mental disorders, however, psychiatry repeatedly reaches its limits. Even today, mental illnesses pose a major challenge. Does our time make us ill? Is coercion necessary? And what kind of psychiatry do we want? Patients and professionals provide their answers to current questions about psychiatry.
