Heraldic Panel of Georg von Massmünster

Description

The central coat of arms is framed by a very grand arch, teeming with dancing and music-making putti and adorned with a triumphal procession in the lunette.

The field is divided into four quarters showing both the arms of the von Massmünster family and those of the abbeys of which Georg von Massmünster became abbot in 1513: the rampant hound of Murbach Abbey in Upper Alsace and, in the small shield in the middle, the hand raised in blessing of the Abbey of Lure in Franche Comté. The two abbot’s staffs crossed behind the mitre decorated with Saint Jerome are a further reminder of these offices. The panel was probably donated to the new refectory of the Dominican Convent of St. Mary Magdalene on the Steinenberg in Basel, built in 1520.
