Hallwyl Reliquary
Description
The impressive crucifixion group is mounted on the roof of the shrine. Three diamonds represent the nails pinning Christ to the cross, while a ruby marks the wound in his side. The lion cameo at the foot of the cross symbolizes the resurrection. The sloping roof bears the arms of Rudolf V and Thüring III of Hallwyl, from whom the cathedral chapter purchased the reliquary in 1470. The shrine once contained relics of the cross and the blood of Christ.
