Objekt 1

Group portrait with four Basel gentlemen

Description

The painter Maximilian Neustück (1756-1834), who came from Mainz and lived in Basel from about 1780, created this picture of a relaxed get-together among friends. The sitters are identified by name on the reverse of the painting: Daniel Burckhardt-Wildt and Peter Vischer-Sarasin (back figure) are depicted playing Trictrac, a Herr Gyssler (Gisler) stands reading at the window, and the instrument maker Jeremias Schlegel watches the game while smoking. A maid brings tea and pastries.
