Objekt 1
Grisaille wallpaper with five scenes from the story of Cupid and Psyche
Description
This type of picture or panoramic wallpaper was produced exclusively in France in the 19th century and exported all over the world. A nearby example is the Zuber company in Rixheim, which still produces reprints of such panoramic wallpapers using historical models. The Musée du papier peint in Rixheim, which has a unique collection of Rixheim wallpapers, is also linked to the Zuber company.
The individual depictions of this series of twelve scenes show (clockwise, starting behind the glass wall on the left):
1. Psyche shows her jewels to the envious sisters
2. Psyche wanders through the world in mourning
3. Psyche in the bath, served by "invisible" girls
4. Psyche's journey to the underworld, she feeds Kerberos
5. Psyche hands Venus the water from the fountain of youth
