Grand Piano

Description

The grand piano by Frere et Sœur Stein was built by Nannette Streicher, nee Stein and Matthaus Andreas Stein in Vienna in 1800. They were the children of the Augsburg piano- and organ-maker Johann Andreas Stein.

Many of the technical features including the action, the damper system, the internal structure and the shape of the case are similar to those found in the model built by their father.

The compass has been enlarged by two keys compared to the earlier model built in 1792 in Augsburg.

The elaborately grooved, cylindrical legs were replaced by more modern four-sided legs and the veneered case is less pretentious, thus highlighting the wooden structure.

The damper is raised by simply pressing on a two-sided knee lever. This corresponds to the original disposition.
