Game cartridge

Description

This extremely elaborately crafted playing card box with ebony veneer and engraved silver inlays has 25 slots for concealed card storage. The playing itself is depicted on the sliding lid. Here, a gentlemen's party is having fun playing cards and smoking a pipe. Amusements of this kind enjoyed great popularity in court and bourgeois society as early as the 17th century in the wake of tobacco imports from colonial territories.
