Engraving with a portrait of Gertrud Sarasin-Battier

Description

Gertrud Sarasin-Battier (1754-1811) was the daughter of Felix Battier (1724-1794) and Gertrud Weiss (1732-1780). She had been married to Jakob Sarasin (1742-1802) since 1770 and is said to have been cured of a serious ailment by Cagliostro. Together with her husband, she was admitted in 1787 as "Werkmeisterin" to the Basel Masonic Lodge founded by Cagliostro (1743-1795). That a Masonic lodge admitted women was atypical for that time. However, Cagliostro, who founded several lodges in different places, adhered to this practice despite criticism.
