Dendrochronology
Description
Dendrochronology determines the felling date as well as the region of origin of trees by analyzing the annual rings. When the Gagliano violin was examined, it turned out that its top was made of wood from two trees.
The last visible growth ring on the bass side dates from 1767, the wood was felled in 1768. On the treble side, the last clearly visible growth ring dates from 1770, the wood was felled in 1771. Both woods come from regions in northern Italy and Switzerland. It is therefore very likely that the violin was made in Naples in 1780.
