Day and night clock

Description

Georg David Polykarp Hahn (1747-1814), the younger brother of Philipp Matthäus Hahn (1739-1790), was a full-time surgeon and worked part-time in his brother's workshop. The signature "Georg David Hahn / in Kornwestheim / 1776" names him as the maker of the clock. The Roman numerals on the dial ring as well as the hand at the top center are cut out of the brass and backed with red silk fabric so that they are visible at night when illuminated by a candle or oil lamp from behind. The ring rotates counterclockwise, with the outstretched index finger of the hand showing the time. During the day, the time was displayed on the enamel dial with Roman hour and Arabic minute numerals.
