Covered Container

Description

This cylindrical vessel held the oil for catechumens consecrated each year by the bishop; hence the inscription on the wall of the vessel: O(LEUM) PVERORVM, which on the lid is abbreviated to: O P. The knob on the lid bears an escutcheon with the crook of a bishop’s crozier, the emblem of the bishopric of Basel that identifies the vessel as the property of Basel Cathedral.
