Chestnut bowl (maronière)
Description
In the 18th century, chestnuts were part of the autumnal menu in all social classes. Sweet chestnuts were prepared in a variety of ways, ranging from uncomplicated roasting and boiling to candying and other elaborate and expensive forms of refinement. The increase in value thus achieved was matched by a corresponding presentation on the tables of the upper classes.
