Celestial globe with wooden frame
Description
On the equator the zodiac is depicted with the figures of the constellations according to Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, Petrus Theodorus and Fredericus Houtman. An inscription "Stella mirabilis quae in solito prae alijs fulgore anno 1572 per an. et trientem apparuit" refers to an observation by the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe that caused a great sensation: On November 11, 1572, he discovered a new, particularly bright star ("supernova") in the constellation of Cassiopeia. A portrait of Tycho Brahe, who had studied in Basel in 1568, can be found in the southern sky.
