Box sundial in the form of a pendant
Description
Christoph Schissler (c. 1531-1608) was one of the most outstanding instrument makers of his time, with whom instrument and compass making reached its peak in Augsburg. His engraved signature is found on the outside of the rim. The outside of the lid depicts a vanitas figure in a columned vault, and the inside depicts a compass rose. On the top of the plate is engraved a sundial with Roman hour numerals. In the lower part there is an equatorial sundial with erectable gnomon and recessed dial with engraved hour curves, tropics and equator as well as the carved pole elevation of 45°.
