Basel in the 19th Century: Public and Private Living Spaces

Description

In the «Haus zum Kleinen Kirschgarten», the permanent exhibition presents within five rooms interiors ranging in style from Empire to Jugendstil. The decor of these rooms is augmented in the corridor by various painted views of Basel, portraits and domestic scenes.

In contrast to the museum interiors which are, for the most part, representational assemblages, the painted domestic scenes depict interior settings within a social context.

The genre of the «Monument», very popular in the 19th century, and the question of the choice of style are conveyed by the St. James Monument.
