Barrel with carving from the Basler Ratskeller
Description
The large wine cask, capable of holding about 10,200 liters of wine, stood in one of Basel's three council cellars, the Gnadentalkeller (today Petersgraben 50-52). The carvings were made in 1723 by the Basel carver Johann Jakob Keller. The upper transverse splinter shows the coats of arms of the "cellar lords" of that time, Joh. Heinrich Beck, Joh. Ludwig Faesch, Andreas Burckhardt, Joh. Jakob Merian, Joh. Ludwig Frey and Daniel Merian. The cellar lords were responsible for the procurement and use of the council wine. The coat of arms of the "Herrenküfer" Jakob Herzog and the date 1722 can be seen on the lower cross splash. The "Herrenküfer" had to take care of the council wine and fill it into pewter jugs on special occasions. Around 1723, there were around eighty filled wine barrels in the Basel council cellars.
