Astronomical floor standing clock
Description
Only two clocks by Philipp Matthäus Hahn (1739-1790) have survived with such an extensive display system: Hours, minutes, seconds, starry sky, sun and moon displays, calendar with month and weekday display. The engraved signature is written above the main dial: "invented / by M. Hahn / in Kornwestheim / and made / by / his workers / in 1775". The clock was made for the Basel silk manufacturer Wilhelm Brenner. The movement was carried on the back to Basel by Hahn's journeyman Mauritius Steiner, while the weights had been cast in Basel and the case ordered by Hahn from a Basel carpenter.
