An oboe by Georg Heinrich Scherer
Description
The Butzbach woodwind instrument maker Georg Heinrich Scherer (1703–1778) came from a distinguished family of instrument makers. After his father's death, he took over the workshop and produced high-quality oboes, flutes, bassoons and clarinets. His instruments are characterised by masterful craftsmanship and tonal precision. They typically bear stamps with symbols such as a striding lion – a reference to his Hessian origins. Four of his instruments, including this oboe, are now in the collection of the Basel Historical Museum.
