A pair of corner cabinets (encoignures)

Description

The two elegant pieces of Parisian Rococo furniture are an example of the Basel upper class of the Ancien Régime following the courtly French taste and introducing such luxury goods. The two cabinets were in the garden room of the house at Leonhardsgraben 38 in 1808 (along with an associated chest of drawers stamped with the Parisian ebony dynasty "Migeon"). It had been the Basel residence of Colonel Daniel Frischmann-Heitz since 1771, who had returned to his homeland after a career in the English East India Company. The curved front of the two-door encoignures is dominated by an asymmetrical rocaille cartouche filled with stylized flowers; the four corners are filled with small cartouches with a cube pattern.
