They sang Parisian chansons, played Polish lute music or collected musical instruments: for Basel’s Renaissance burghers, polymaths like Amerbach, Platter and Iselin, music was essential to the cultural life of the city. This is the story told by a special exhibition of unique prints and manuscripts from that period to be held from 24 May 2019 to 2 February 2020. Öffnet internen Link im aktuellen FensterDetails

The Barfüsserkirche owes its name to the barefooted Franciscans, the mendicant order that built it as a convent church in the 14th century. Since 1894, the Barfüsserkirche has housed one of the oldest collections on the Upper Rhine. The treasures preserved there include attractions of world-class calibre. At the Basel Historical Museum – Barfüsserkirche visitors are invited to embark on a journey through the ages and to discover the history of Basel from Celtic times to the 21st century.

The Musikmuseum is housed in the Lohnhof, a building steeped in history. Originally part of a medieval convent, the Lohnhof was used as a prison until 1995. Unlike its erstwhile inmates, however, today’s visitors are at liberty to roam through Switzerland’s largest collection of musical instruments. Spread over three floors, the Musikmuseum boasts 650 instruments.

Conversion

Dear visitors,

On 24 May, the special exhibition «Sound Pictures – Musical Treasures from 16th-Century» will open it's doors.
Therefore, the second floor of the Musikmuseum will remain closed to the public until the opening.

Thank you for your understanding.

The sheer grandeur and superb early Classicist architecture of the late 18th-century Haus zum Kirschgarten cannot fail to impress. It was built in 1775–1780 and repurposed as a museum in 1951. Occupying half the available space are the 18th- and 19th-century period rooms, where visitors can immerse themselves in the world once inhabited by Basel’s more affluent burghers. But the mansion also houses several world-class collections.
