MUSEUM OF HISTORY

1. CITY HISTORY OF BASEL

The Museum of History tells the story of Basel through the many different objects exhibited in the Barfüsserkirche. The Franciscan church is more than just a showcase, however; it is itself part of history and as such the museum’s largest single exhibit. This tour takes you to a selection of eight objects of special relevance to the history of Basel, in two of which you will discover your current location, the Basel Historical Museum.

2. SAINT, MISTRESS, AND FACTORY WORKER – WOMEN IN BASEL THROUGH THE AGES

This tour singles out a few female figures from the past, and by shedding light on their very different biographies shows how the image of women has changed as society’s needs have changed. Some of them were very influential and shaped public life in Basel with lasting effect.

permanent exhibition:
  • Medieval Tapestries
  • The Great Cabinet of Curiosity
  • Archeology in Basel
  • Guilds and Societies in Basel
  • The Basel Cathedral Treasure
  • The Basel Dance of Death
  • The Basel Fountains (coming soon)

More tours are in process of planning.
