Story #1

Epidemics, Black Death and Covid-19

Object 1: Front page «Observationes», 1614 // Object 2: Vial with vaccine from Moderna // Madrid, Basel, 2020 // Inv. 2021.42.

Tired of Covid-19?

Preventative measures, number of cases, lockdown, opening, vaccination and everything is going to be alright. Plagues and epimdemics are in fact a rather old phenomenon. Pestilence, also known as black death, had a firm grip on Europe for many years and caused a lot of hardship and suffering. How did people deal with that threat back then? How could they protect themselves ?

Basel city physician Felix Platter tackled these challenges in the 16th century. His booklet «Observationes» is a collection of medical histories and gives an insight into Platter’s work. Find out more about the famous son of this town in the following video.
