Letters of exiled authors from the Otto Kleiber Archives

During the National Socialist regime, numerous publications by authors exiled from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia appeared in the feuilleton of the Basler National-Zeitung.

In the small library showcase, the University Library of Basel presents selected testimonies from the rich collection of letters and autographs of Otto Kleiber (1883–1969), who worked as a feuilleton editor for the National-Zeitung from 1919 to 1953. The letters of Erika Mann, Siegfried Trebitsch and Eugen Gürster are now on display.

The letters written to Otto Kleiber by these writers provide insight into the difficult living and working conditions in exile. At the same time, they point to a continuity of literary and journalistic work and show that the feuilleton of the largest Basel daily newspaper was an important place of publication of the German-speaking exile in the years 1933 to 1945.
