The project involves cataloguing and digitising two fundamental archive collections covering the years 1933 to 1960. In addition, the collection database will be expanded to include an archive module that can be linked to other systems.
Improved access to the museum's own archives is crucial for provenance research. The project is funded by the ‘Framework budget for active provenance research in the cantonal museums of Basel-Stadt for the years 2023 to 2026/2029’ of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
The selected archival materials are the most important holdings for provenance research in the HMB archives. While the ‘Commission Protocols’ discuss new additions to the collection, the ‘Offers and Acquisitions (Purchases, Gifts, Bequests)’ contain a wide variety of information on the collection items. The period under investigation was chosen with regard to the context of injustice surrounding the confiscation of property as a result of Nazi persecution. A finding aid is being created for the holdings to be catalogued and digitised, which will make them easier to search. Their cataloguing and processing using a new archive module that brings objects and archival records together in the same collection database will make it possible to export archive metadata to other databases in future. The project thus generates significant added value for internal and external provenance researchers.
The project is currently being implemented.
The final report will be made available here once it has been completed.
The HMB regularly hosts exciting events on the topic of provenance research. You can find the events in the > programme.
