Zurich/Schooren
Z mark with 3 points in underglaze blue, ca. 1775
Porcelain, on glaze painting and gilding
diameter 23 cm
Inv. 1932.312.
During a dispute over the use of the Zürichsee, delegates from Zurich had lodged in the monastery of Einsiedeln. To compensate for the high costs they had incurred, the council of Zurich had a table service of nearly 500 pieces made for the monastery by the Zurich/Schooren factory. One artist is believed to have been occupied for more than a year in painting the floral decoration. This plate could be one of the group of "plate(s) with a golden rim and a rose garland, magnificent, diameter 23 cm" mentioned in the inventory of 1883. The white moulded pattern of roses, which runs in relief around the plate, augments and enhances the painted decoration. The delicately shaped border was based on prototypes from the Meissen and Ludwigsburg factories, including a form of relief decoration for the rim of a cup from Ludwigsburg. The flourishes that curl from the edge of the plate over the border are, however, original inventions of the Zurich/Schooren factory.
