Basle, 1st half 18th century
Earthenware, stencilled pattern, height 20 cm, length 29 cm, depth 12.6 cm
Inv. 1928.108.
This model represents the simple type of tiled stove that was used for heating smaller rooms in townhouses and, above all, houses in the countryside around Basle. This shape of stove is also common in the Zürich area. One of these stoves was installed in the maid's room on the upper floor of the Haus zum Kirschgarten. The decoration of the tiles with a stencilled pattern was widespread in the area during the C16 and again from the C18 to C20. Before firing the tile was covered with a stencil of perforated leather and white slip was applied over it. Once the stencil was removed the pattern stood out against the dark ground. A transparent green lead glaze enhanced the contrast of light and dark and gave strength and gloss to the pattern. The knobs and feet were turned on the wheel, and further modelled as necessary. The pilasters on the back carry the inscription "Got gib Gnad" (God give mercy).
