Room 204

TAPESTRY ROOM

In an early planning phase of the Haus zum Kirschgarten, this room was referred to as the "Grand Cabinet de compagnie", i.e. the parlor. When the Palais was furnished as a residential museum in the mid-20th century, it was furnished with four large-format knitted wall tapestries. These were made in 1770 in the world-famous tapestry manufactories in Aubusson (central France). Well-heeled citizens of Basel repeatedly ordered tapestries there to decorate their magnificent city palaces. The tapestries with rural scenes shown here originally decorated the "Bischofshof" (Rittergasse 1). Also in the "Seidenhof" (Blumenrain 34) and in the "Segerhof" (Blumenrain 17) were tapestries from Aubusson, which today are exhibited in the Haus zum Kirschgarten on the 2nd floor.
