Horses as House Signs

The area around the Fischmarkt and Schifflände has been remodelled many times over the centuries. Kronengasse, which originally led from Fischmarkt to Schifflände, disappeared in 1911 and with it the house at Kronengasse 5, mounted above whose door was a relief of a horse (left) dated 1603. To the right of the saddled horse is the coat of arms of the Ramspeck family. The inscription on the edge translates as follows: “This work remembers M. Jerg Ramspeck in the year 1603,” indicating that the house owner, the saddler Jörg Ramspeck, had the sign renewed in 1603.
The other house sign with a prancing horse comes from the inn called Zum Rösslein on the corner of Eisengasse/Tanzgässlein, which in the fifteenth century was also called “Gesslin zem Ross” (“Horse Lane”).
