Room 309

Green wainscot room

This room belongs to parts of the Haus zum Kirschgarten, whose original wall decoration has been preserved. It served as a bedroom for the master of the house Johann Rudolf Burckhardt (1750-1813). The walls are decorated with plastic-looking decorative paintings. They show figures of classical mythology and prove the great interest of the builder in ancient art. The figures were taken from a large-format series of copper engravings by Giovanni Volpato (1735-1803) and Giovanni Ottaviani (1735-1808), published in 1772-1776, which made Raphael's (1483-1520) painting of the loggias in the Vatican from 1518-1519 known to a wider public. The wall painting thus goes back to one of the most famous decorative cycles of the High Renaissance. With the double representation of the goddess of love Venus with the Cupid boy and the couple Hercules and Omphale, the theme of love is particularly emphasized. This may be related to the personal situation of the master of the house, who had entered into a union with Sarah Rohner (1761-1825) in 1779 after a protracted divorce process.
