Pleasure for palate and eye

The discovery and exploration of non-European countries brought new luxury goods to Europe from the 17th century onwards: tea, coffee and chocolate initially appeared on the market as medicines and were only available at high prices. Later, they increasingly joined the traditional alcoholic beverages beer and wine as stimulants. The exotic hot drinks had a stimulating effect on the human organism. During the 18th century, the luxury goods imported from China and Japan, Arabia and Central America were affordable almost only for the upper classes. Specific vessel shapes were developed for each drink, which were influential until the 20th century. At the same time, tobacco conquered the European market. Pipes and snuff boxes served not only for tobacco consumption, but also as accessories. These luxury goods of the gentlemen are contrasted with those of the wealthy ladies, who enjoyed jewelry, precious boxes and perfume bottles.
