Dutch box clock

Description

Such Dutch box clocks were particularly popular in Basel in the 18th century.
The case is crowned by three carved and gilded figures: in the center Atlas supporting the firmament, framed by two figures of Fama, the goddess of glory, holding a trombone. The dial is framed by allegories of the four seasons. Above it appears a fleet against a painted background, set in motion by the clockwork.
