Dr. Michael Matzke

[Translate to EN:] Kurator Münzkabinett: Dr. Michael Matzke

BIOGRAPHY

Michael Matzke has been curator of Basel Historical Museum’s coin cabinet since 2006. He studied medieval history, art history and related disciplines in Tübingen and Pisa, and as part of an interdisciplinary project from 1996 to 1999 studied coin series from Worms, Tübingen, Basel and Breisgau according to historical, numismatic and metallurgical criteria. From 1999 to 2001 he was employed as a research assistant at the Fitzwilliam Museum of the University of Cambridge, where he worked on the handbook Medieval European Coinage (Northern Italy) and as curator of ancient coins. He was a research assistant for medieval history and related disciplines at the University of Marburg an der Lahn from 2001 and has been responsible for identifying and evaluating coin finds from Central Switzerland at the Fundmünzen der Schweiz in Bern since July 2015.

His fields of specialization in numismatics extend from early Greek coins to the history of money in the German-speaking world and Italy and the art of the Renaissance. He believes in interdisciplinary approaches and methods and is committed to the integration of numismatics in the wider field of political history and the history of art and culture.
